Pantomime 2009 - Aladdin

The Wonersh Players performed Aladdin, their long-established “late, late” pantomime, during the February Half-Term Holiday this year.

The traditional tale wass given a new twist by writers Mark Cozens and Dawn Jones with the addition of two grumbling old gents commenting on the show from the Royal Box! In old Peking, Aladdin is love-struck by the Princess but is unable to even talk to her thanks to the all powerful Emperor. An offer of help from Aladdin’s long forgotten uncle Ebinarzer seems promising but needless to say this rotten relative has his own agenda. Inevitably Aladdin gets stuck in a cave with only a magic lamp and a couple of Genies to help him. Meanwhile, the plans of two hapless builders to improve the palace are thwarted by the over zealous policemen, but soon they join forces with the lovely Widow Twankey and her hard working son Wishy Washy to rescue the Princess from Ebinarzer. Will there be a happy ending for Aladdin and the Princess? Will Widow Twankey find love? Will Ebinarzer get all he deserves? You’ll have to see the show to find out, but I wouldn’t bet against it.

The Wonersh Players’ usual blend of old jokes, memorable songs, strong characters and wonderful costumes by Marian Cozens gave children and adults a show to remember.

Performances were at the Wonersh Memorial Hall on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th and Saturday 21st February at 19:30, with a Children’s Matinee on Saturday 21st at 15:00.

Tickets cost £4.00 for adults and £3.00 for children and seniors and profits of the show went to the CHASE Children’s Hospice and the Fountain Centre.
