About the Wonersh Players

The Wonersh Players recently celebrated their 25th anniversary, a milestone they are very proud to have reached. In the autumn of 1982 a public meeting was held at the Wonersh Memorial Hall. It was hoped to resurrect the much lamented and admired Wonersh Amateur Dramatic Society (WADS). After initial hostilities, it was agreed that a new society should be formed and the Wonersh Players was chosen as a name.

Apart from a two actors from the Shamley Green amateur dramatic society SHADES, and a two from the original WADS, the newly formed Wonersh Players were mostly made up from local enthusiasts. Cinderella was agreed to be the first pantomime and when the show finally opened to the public in February 1983, it was clear that the relaxed and creative atmosphere worked wonderfully, a quality that set them apart from other local groups. A critic from a local magazine wrote “Nobody has more fun than the Wonersh Players”, and that atmosphere still remains after 27 years.

Now that nearly 30 years have passed, the Wonersh Players are still going strong, writing and producing a new pantomime every year with new scenery and costumes for every show. A few of the founder members of the Players are still involved
and although the cast changes slightly from year to year, the majority have been active members for a very long time. With new members joining every year and exciting ideas still flowing, the Players will go from strength to strength. One thing is for sure, nobody will have more fun than the Wonersh Players.
